We live in a world of structures. And all too often we ignore them. They fade into the background as we go about our ordinary business. It’s easier when we travel, since we see with fresh eyes.
Photography helps me look closely at structures. What can I discern about them as expressions of engineering and construction, as symbols, as functional entities, as anchors of our urban or rural experiences? Centrally, I think about them as visual experiences, since that is how I will represent them to the viewer.
As is typical of my work, the subject of my structure images is as much about shape, colour, line, textures, patterns, light, tonality, and surfaces as it is about the structure itself. I am not trying for realistic renders, so I have no compunction about using processing techniques to enhance the experience.
By the way, a warning. Some of the structures here are real, even if altered in some ways. Some are not. Can you tell which is which?
